The USC Trojans may be the favorite to win the 2009 BCS Championship, but as the NCAA Football season draws closer, USC’s lack of premier receivers is starting to become more and more noticeable.
USC will be relying heavily on freshman Ronald Johnson, the consensus number one 2007 wide receiver recruit.
But Johnson caught just five passes for 95 yards and one touchdown last season, and if that’s the Trojans’ go-to guy, then they could be in trouble.
Still, sportsbooks like BetUS have Southern California at 3-1 odds to win the College Football championship next season.
Tight end Fred Davis was USC’s clutch pass catcher last season, but he's moved on to the NFL. After Johnson, the Trojans will have Patrick Turner and Vidal Hazelton penciled in for the next two spots.
Turner joined the Trojans in 2005 and was one of the most-heralded freshman wide receiver in the country at the time. But he has recorded just 89 passes and seven TDs in three seasons. Hazelton has 51 catches in two seasons, numbers which also leave a lot to be desired.
Other receivers include David Ausberry and Damian Williams, but they will enter the 2008 season seriously lacking in experience.
