In Week I, we got all over the ACC’s case for their less than stellar results against less than stellar opposition. While USC was rolling Ohio State in “The Collision at the Coliseum”, this week we call out the rest of the Pac 10 for getting punked 4-0 by the little sister Mountain West.
UNLV 23 Arizona State 20 OT
Q uite clearly, the most startling result of the week was UNLV’s 23-20 OT upset of 15th ranked Arizona State. The Rebels, 6-29 in three years under HC Mike Sanford and 1-1 this year off 42-21 loss at Utah, played the Sun Devils even throughout. UNLV drove 74 yards in ten plays to get the equalizing score with just 18 seconds to play and then blocked a game-tying ASU field goal in the overtime. The Sun Devils were in an obvious look ahead to this week’s home game showdown with #2 Georgia, now they’ll face the Bulldogs unranked.
BYU 59 UCLA 0
BYU met UCLA for the third time in a calendar year, the Bruins winning last year at the Rose Bowl 27-17, the Cougars taking the Las Vegas Bowl 17-16. BYU left no doubt in the rubber match by spanking UCLA 59-0 in Provo. Max Hall tied a school record by throwing seven TDs in the blowout. Th e Cougars had a 521-239 yardage edge, made 30 first-downs to the Bruins 13, and 38 minutes time of possession. It was 42-0 at the half.
TCU 31 Stanford 14
The Horned Frogs snapped a 14-14 halftime tie with 17 unanswered second-half points to pull away from Stanford. The final score was much closer on the scoreboard than on the stat sheet where the Cardinal was outgained 378-193. TCU held the ball 39 minutes while grinding out 233 yards on the ground. Stanford could manage just 44 net yards in their first five drives. The Horned Frogs improved to 46-6 in their L52 home games and 11-2 against BCS conferences.
New Mexico 36 Arizona 28
The previously winless Lobos took advantage of five Wildcat turnovers and beat previously unbeaten Arizona in Albuquerque. New Mexico had struggled on offense in losses to TCU and Texas A&M but moved the ball all night against the visitors. James Aho was the hero of the night connecting on field goals of 24, 43, 46, 42, and 48 yards as the Lobos converted the five takeaways into 19 points.
The rest of the Pac 10 had mixed results. Cal showed its true colors and never got off the plane in their 35-27 loss at Maryland. The Terps led 28-6 after three quarters. Oregon must be living right after an improbable OT win at Purdue. Washington was completely outclassed by the Oklahoma juggernaut 55-14 leaving it to Oregon State to save the day with a 45-7 win over hapless Hawaii. After just three weeks it might be to early to call but ... it sure looks like the Pac 10 is USC and the nine dwarfs.
